Tusitiri is based at Lamu, a small island on the north coast of Kenya, over 200kms north of Mombasa port. Of Swahili origin, Lamu was borne from the trading routes of the Middle East to Arabia and for centuries hosted dhows sailing in from Arabia and India, trading ivory and spices. Today, although no longer under the rule of its own Sultanate, Lamu maintains its air of mystique and times long past – a step back in time to an era without roads and invasive modern day ways, where the pace of life is slow and the only modes of transport are dhow, donkey or foot.

A number of domestic airlines operate daily scheduled service from Wilson Airport Nairobi to Lamu, and there are also regular flights from Mombasa and Malindi.
